Police make arrest in clerk abduction

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Police Department made an arrest Wednesday in Tuesday night’s abduction of a Family Dollar store employee following a theft.

Police said Wednesday they arrested William Allen, 34, and charged him with two counts of abduction and one count of complicity to abduction. All three charges are third-degree felonies. Allen was booked into the Mahoning County jail, police said.

An employee of the Family Dollar store on Canfield Road in Cornersburg told police she followed a man out of the store when she saw that he had not paid for items about 10 p.m. The man entered the store wearing a mask and took a storage tote and filled it with various items from the store and walked out.

The woman, who is in her 30s, walked to the vehicle, a gold Buick containing the thief and two other men, and “that’s when one of them pulled (the woman) into the auto and it sped off eastbound on Canfield Road,” a police report states.

While traveling down the road, the woman was fighting with the men and scratched all three of them, police said. The men kept punching the woman in the area of her left eye. She also tried to get them to wreck the car by grabbing the steering wheel and gear shift, but that did not work, police said.

The men threw her out of the car a couple of miles east of the store at the intersection of Canfield Road and Billingsgate Road, just east of Glenwood Avenue.

One of her customers happened to pull onto that road and was able to drive her back to the store.

A Youngstown police detective swabbed the woman’s hands for DNA and took photos of her injuries, the police report states. Detectives also looked at surveillance video and interviewed the victim and a second employee in the store at the time of the incident.

The victim told police she could identify the driver and that she scratched each one of them, so they could have scratch marks on their faces.

Youngstown police indicated on a list of arrests that a man, 29, of Hermitage, Pa., was arrested in connection to an aggravated robbery at the same store, but the man’s name is not mentioned in the police report. It’s unclear what his connection is to the robbery.
