WHAT: City council meeting Monday

PRESENT: Reynald Paolone, John Moliterno, Lily Martuccio, Keith Schubert, Jeff Kay, Sam Zirafi and Mayor James Melfi

ABSENT: Mark Standohar and Thomas Grumley

Council:

• Heard from Treasurer Mark Zuppo, reminding residents they need to file their income taxes with the city even if they do not owe anything, to help with determining what needs to be withheld and what returns are;

• Gave second reading for proceeding with the submission of a renewal 1.8-mill tax levy for senior services for the Girard Multigenerational Center;

• Announced the annual Christmas tree lighting celebration will be 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 4 by the city building with a small parade planned;

• Reported the fire department hosted a drive-

thru COVID-19 booster clinic last weekend with 40 residents taking part;

• Announced several local businesses will take part in “Shop Small Business Saturday” on Saturday in the city’s downtown area;

• Gave first reading to participating in the Ohio Public Works Commission state capital improvement program and Transportation Improvement Program for waterline replacement project on Trumbull Avenue;

• Set the finance meeting for 6:30 p.m. Dec. 13 before the final council meeting of the year. Moliterno said officials will review finances.

WHAT: Board of Education meeting Oct. 26

PRESENT: Mark Zuppo, Karen Thomas, Diane Alejars, Vincent Ragozine and Sue Ellen Harris Davis

The board:

• Accepted the retirement resignation of Edward Miner, high school science teacher, effective May 26, after 30 years in Girard schools;

• Adopted the comprehensive school counseling plan for evaluating of counselors and social workers in the district. The plan was last updated in 2014;

• Scheduled a work session 4 p.m. Nov. 18 at the high school library to go over updates to state policies including tobacco use and vaping on district property by staff. The regular meeting will follow after it was rescheduled due to Thanksgiving;

• Approved an agreement with Youngstown State University for an after-school explore careers program. The agreement includes busing for the program;

• Approved an agreement with the Ohio High School Athletic Association for tournament site rental for volleyball and soccer games in Girard.
