Second fire death in last two weeks identified

Austintown apartment blaze declared unintentional

AUSTINTOWN — Dorothy Bankhead, 74, has been identified as the victim of the fatal apartment fire early Sunday, marking the township’s second such fatality in two weeks.

The department was called at 12:55 a.m. to Greenbriar Village apartments at 2230 S. Raccoon Road by an unidentified caller who reported smoke on all three floors of the building.

Upon arrival, crews determined the source to be Bankhead’s second-floor apartment, according to a report. It was determined the fire started in the kitchen near the stove, the report states.

Bankhead was found without a pulse under her kitchen table, the report states. She was transported to a local hospital, where she later died. The report lists her cause of death as exposure to fire products and smoke inhalation while attempting to escape.

The fire has been declared unintentional, according to the report.

No one else was found in the apartment, and all other residents in the building were evacuated prior to the department’s arrival.

Bankhead’s death is the second in two weeks for the department. The body of an older woman was found Oct. 10 when the department was called to a structure fire on Callaway Circle. Her identity has not been released by officials who are continuing their investigation.

Fire Chief Andy Frost told trustees at a meeting Monday most firefighters in communities of a similar size see two fatalities throughout their entire careers.

“And we’ve seen two in one month,” Frost said. “It’s extremely difficult for everyone involved, and our thoughts are with the families of both victims.”

Trustee Steve Kent told Frost and police Chief Robert Gavalier to make sure their crews are staying healthy amid the tragedies.

“That’s a lot we’ve seen, drastic things we shouldn’t see. That’s a lot bearing on our guys and our ladies,” Kent said. “Please let them know we’re thinking of them and if they need help, reach out.”
