Runners of all styles tackle Valley race

BOARDMAN — Molly Campbell spends a lot of time running around with her three children, but more recently, she partook of a different brand of running.

“I like to consider myself a recreational runner. I go when I can and time allows,” Campbell, of Sharpsville, Pa., explained.

Plenty of time allowed her and many others of all ages to take part in Sunday’s fifth annual Youngstown Marathon, which featured a 5K walk / run, a 26.2-mile full marathon and a 13.1-mile half marathon.

Main sponsors were Huntington Bank, Mercy Health and Second Sole, a Boardman sporting-goods store.

Runners in all three events began Sunday morning near Second Sole, 755 Boardman-Canfield Road, and ended on Ron Park Drive just off U.S. Route 224 under overcast skies and temperatures in the high 40s with dry conditions.

As she approached the finish line, Campbell, who was in the 5K event, was met by a cheering section on the sidelines that consisted of her husband, Brian Campbell, and sons Sully, 4; Ben, 6; and Elliot, 8, who held up a pink sign on which were written notes of support.

“When they were little, I would take them in a jogging stroller. That’s how I would train,” recalled Campbell, who also was a 5K ambassador for this year’s Youngstown Marathon and has run in three Pittsburgh marathons.

“She’s the star of the show,” Nakol Wentling of Sharon, Pa., said about Campbell, a longtime friend. “She got me to do a half marathon and a ton of 5Ks.”

Perhaps not surprisingly, Campbell and Wentling, who works for the city of Sharon, ran together in Sunday’s 5K event.

Also running as a twosome were Sarah Plant of Mineral Ridge and her daughter, Rebekah, 9, who by far held out the longest regarding her decision to take part in the first place.

“She decided last night to run with us,” Sarah said about Rebekah, a Seaborn Elementary School fourth-grader. “When you’re 9 and have all kinds of energy, you can do it.”

For her part, Rebekah recently ran a mile with the Mineral Ridge High School cross-country team, her mother continued.

Running appears to be a family tradition for Plant, whose husband, Chris Plant, and brother, Andy Burkhart, run in the Akron Marathon, Plant said, adding that her brother began running in high school about 20 years ago.

Taking home a first-place finish overall in the 5K was Ty Reeher, 23, of Kinsman, who posted a time of 17:00:35.

“I began to run in middle school, in seventh grade in 2011,” he recalled.

Reeher’s athletic prowess began with a desire to be a basketball player in middle school, which required a consistent running regimen for which he joined the cross-country team. Nevertheless, an interest in running superseded that of basketball, and he began training by following his coach’s instruction, Reeher continued.

Today, he tries to run an average of seven miles daily and has adopted the approach to “go with the flow and do what my body tells me,” he continued.

The 5K runners followed a route that took them along the nearby 1.5-mile walking and biking trail between Route 224 and Shields Road in Mill Creek Park and through several township neighborhoods.

Those who ran in the half marathon followed a path that largely paralleled Lakes Cohasset and Newport in Mill Creek Park; the full marathon runners meandered through large portions of downtown Youngstown, Youngstown State University — including around Stambaugh Stadium — and parts of the West Side before returning to Boardman, organizers said.
