Religion News: COVID-19 memorial set

COVID-19 MEMORIAL: As part of an ongoing mission to provide outreach and services to the community, the Catholic Funeral and Cemetery Services is hosting a COVID-19 Memorial Prayer Service. Bishop David Bonnar of the Diocese of Youngstown, will lead a ceremony 2 p.m. Sunday at Calvary Cemetery honoring family, friends and front-line personnel lost during the COVID-19 pandemic.

There will be a dedication and blessing of a COVID-19 memorial bench by Bonnar. There also will be a wreath-laying ceremony with Youngstown Mayor Tito Brown, the Youngstown police and fire chiefs, Mahoning County Health Commissioner Erin Bishop and former National Commander of AMVETS, Jan C. Brown, honoring first responders, safety personnel, and essential workers.

FALL FESTIVAL: Pleasant Valley Church, 2055 Pleasant Valley Road, Liberty, will host a fall festival 2 to 7 p.m. today. The event will include food trucks, hay rides, music, a prayer tent, bounce house and a pumpkin patch.

Special guests will include Christian illusionist Joseph Young, and evangelist Carmine Azzato, former pro-wrestler.

STAY AT HOME TEA: Mount Olive FBH Church, Youngstown, will host a stay-at-home tea virtual event on Zoom for breast cancer awareness sponsored by the Senior and Junior Mission departments. The event will take pace at 6 p.m. Thursday with speaker Lola Simmons, executive director for Home for Good. The theme is “From Survivor to

105TH ANNIVERSARY: Second Baptist Church “A House of Hope” will celebrate its 105th anniversary at a gala Nov. 5 at Packard Music Hall, Warren. The black-tie affair will acknowledge longtime members and share the church’s history. There will be special presentations, dancing and music. GUEST SPEAKER: Faith Fellowship Church of God, 388 E. Midlothian Blvd., Youngstown, will have guest worship leaders and ministers, the Stevens family, for their morning worship 10:45 a.m. Sunday.

GUEST SPEAKER: The First Friday Club of Greater Youngstown Speaker Series will meet noon Nov. 11 at Avion on the Water Banquet Center, 2177 W. Western Reserve Road in Canfield. The guest speaker will be Sheila Triplett, CEO of Mahoning Youngstown Community Action Partnership. Triplett will present her address, “Why Black Lives Matter, A Historical Prospective.” There will be an opportunity for participants’ questions to follow. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. and the speaker begins at noon. Cost is $18. Call 330-720-4498 for reservations by Nov. 5.

CHAPLET OF DIVINE MERCY: Catholic Funeral and Cemetery Services of the Diocese of Youngstown will offer The Chaplet of Divine Mercy at all four cemeteries 3 p.m. every Friday. The Chaplet will be said at alternating cemeteries.

The first Friday of the month will be at Calvary Cemetery, Youngstown; the second Friday at Resurrection Cemetery, Austintown; the third Friday at All Souls Cemetery, Cortland; and the fourth Friday at Calvary Cemetery, Massillon.

ORGAN DEDCATION: Western Reserve United Methodist Church, 4580 Canfield Road in Canfield, will host an organ

dedication ceremony 7 p.m. Sunday.

TRUNK OR TREAT: Fairview United Methodist Church, 21 Fairview Ave., Niles, will host a trunk or treat 1 to 2 p.m. Oct. 30 following the Niles Halloween parade at noon.

BOOS FOR SHOES: The youth ministry at St. Robert Church in Cortland will host a Boos for Shoes carnival 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the lower church parking lot behind the church. There will be crafts and games. Admission is $5 with money raised donated to the adopt-a-school program through LOAF. The youth also are collecting new or gently worn shoes to be donated to Soles4Souls, a program that provides shoes to Third World countries.

RETIREMENT: Champion Christian Church will mark the retirement of its longtime pastor, the Rev. Kenneth E. Hopkins Jr., as he concludes a 40-year career in ministry and community service.

A worship service recognizing his dedication to the church and the community is set for 10:30 a.m. Oct. 31 at the church, 151 Center St. W. A reception will follow.

Hopkins has served Champion Christian Church as pastor for 26 years. Under his leadership, the church celebrated 125 years in 2018 with the opening of the Disciple Center to accommodate several ministry and community

groups, including its youth group.

TORAH STUDIES FOR CHRISTIANS: Torah Studies for Christians virtual series will present “Two Torahs: Written and Oral” 7 p.m. Nov. 3 via Zoom.

The event is co-sponsored by Rabbi Joseph Schonberger, spiritual leader of Temple El Emeth, Liberty. A free-will offering will be accepted. Registration is not required.
