Man surrenders in Austintown killing

AUSTINTOWN — A woman was shot fatally outside a Compass West apartment Friday night, and a man is in the Mahoning County jail with no bond facing aggravated murder, police said.

A police dispatcher at 10:37 p.m. received a call from the woman about an ongoing domestic dispute, and the dispatcher could hear arguing with a man, said Lt. Tom Collins of the Austintown Police Department. The man and woman shared a child.

The police dispatcher “heard multiple shots through the phone and then screaming,” Collins said, and then the dispatcher realized the woman had been shot. The episode unfolded outside the 1057 Compass West Drive building.

The first officers arrived and tried to render emergency care, but she had died because of the severity of wounds and placement of the bullets, Collins said.

The dispatcher had heard six shots, he noted.

The name of the victim, 25, will not be released by the county coroner’s office until early this week.

The suspect had left the complex, but a female witness was outside the building and was getting “multiple calls” from him. He is identified by police and jail records as Steve W. Green III, 24. Green was calling the friend’s phone, and police tried to talk to him, Collins said.

Eventually, with his family’s help, Green was convinced to turn himself in to police. Austintown police followed him to the police station “and he admitted to the shooting,” Collins said.

He was booked at the jail on Saturday.

The weapon was not found Friday night, and its caliber at this point is undetermined, the lieutenant said.

A killing happened at the complex last October, too. Keylan Davis, 32, was shot multiple times, according to the coroner, at 1080 Compass West Drive.

Police said the Davis shooting occurred about 9:50 a.m. and he was shot in the throat. Officers were called after a report of three shots fired in the building.
