Georgia man pleads guilty to raping teen
YOUNGSTOWN — John Matthews, 49, of Cleveland, Ga., pleaded guilty Monday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court to three counts of rape, three counts of sexual battery and two counts of gross sexual imposition.
The victim was a teen girl with developmental disabilities.
Matthews was scheduled to go to trial Monday before Judge Maureen Sweeney, but he accepted a plea offer prosecutors made earlier as jurors stood outside the door to the courtroom waiting to enter for jury selection Monday morning.
As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors will recommend that Matthews get 11 years in prison.
Matthews entered what is known as an Alford plea, meaning he accepts the ramifications of a guilty verdict without having first attested to having committed the crime.
Court documents state that Matthews committed all eight offenses between Jan. 1, 2018, and Sept. 1, 2018.
Matthews will be sentenced later, after the Community Corrections Association carries out a history of his background. Sweeney revoked Matthews’ bond.
