COVID-19 cases decline in Mahoning County facilities

Mahoning County nursing homes and assisted-living facilities saw a sharp decline in COVID-19 cases this week, dropping from 56 cases last week to 35 this week.

But the number of cases doubled at Youngstown’s private prison, the Northeast Ohio Correctional Center, from 11 cases to 22.

According to data provided to the Ohio Department of Health, there were no additional COVID-19 deaths this week at any of the nursing homes and other long-term care facilities in the Mahoning Valley.

No Mahoning County long-term-care facilities have high numbers of cases this week. Last week, Briarfield at Ashley Circle nursing home in Austintown had 10 cases among patients and staff, but the number was down to three this week (two patient cases and one staff case).

Hampton Woods Nursing Center nursing home in Poland had eight cases among patients and staff last week but has only one patient case this week. The largest number this week is at the Inn at Poland Way assisted-living facility in Poland, which has one patient case and three staff cases.

The number of cases at Columbiana County facilities remained at the same high level this week as last week — 19 cases among patients and staff, including 14 cases at an assisted-living facility in East Liverpool, suggesting the numbers may not have been updated through the Ohio Department of Health.

According to the data given to the state, Trumbull County nursing homes and assisted-living facilities had five staff cases and no patient cases this week. That’s an increase of three cases of COVID-19 over last week as three facilities entered the list again this week after having none last week.

Among nursing homes statewide, there are 609 patient cases this week and 660 staff cases. Last week there were 574 patient case and 740 staff cases.

The number of cases of the virus at the Northeast Ohio Correctional Center in Youngstown remained at seven this week, all among staff. And the number of cases at the Trumbull Correctional Institution in Leavittsburg remained at six, but the number now includes three staff and three inmates instead of three staff and three inmates last week.

Among prisons statewide, there are now 102 COVID-19 staff cases and 53 inmate cases. Last week there were 101 staff cases and 64 inmate cases.
