Bond set at $1M in Austintown homicide

AUSTINTOWN — During a hearing lasting only about two minutes Wednesday morning, Steve W. Green III, 24, of Birch Street in Youngstown, was arraigned in the Friday night shooting death of his former girlfriend, Ashley Lockhart, 25.

Judge Scott Hunter of Mahoning County Area Court in Austintown set bond at $1 million on Green’s aggravated murder charge. Green was arraigned by video hookup from the Mahoning County jail. He returns to the same court for his next hearing 11 a.m. Oct. 20. It is a preliminary hearing, where Hunter will determine whether there is sufficient evidence to bind the case over to a county grand jury.

Green is accused of fatally wounding Lockhart outside of Compass West apartment while Lockhart was on the phone with an Austintown dispatcher, who heard six gunshots through the phone line.

A friend of Lockhart said she and Green have a daughter, 5, together and had been together eight years before they broke up about a year ago. Lockhart also was from Youngstown but was visiting her friend’s home in Austintown when the shooting took place.

Lt. Tom Collins of the Austintown Police Department said the dispatcher “heard multiple shots through the phone and then screaming.”

Austintown police later arrested Green.

Collins said that with help from Green’s family, Green was persuaded to turn himself in to police. Austintown police followed him to the police station “and he admitted to the shooting,” Collins said.
