State sees increase of more than 4,800 cases

The Ohio Department of Health reported 4,876 new COVID-19 cases Tuesday, bringing the state total since the pandemic began to 1,262,018.

In the Mahoning Valley, Mahoning County logged the most new cases with 106; Trumbull County reported 79; and Columbiana County, 49.

Mahoning reported 24,945 cases and 626 deaths. Trumbull is at 18,435 cases and 500 deaths. Columbiana is at 10,499 cases and 236 deaths.

All three counties remain below the state average vaccination rate of 52.41 percent, with a 50.72 percent rate in Mahoning County, a 48.48 percent rate in Trumbull County and 41.14 percent in Columbiana County.

In Youngstown, the East Library branch, 430 Early Road, is closed temporarily due to a staff shortage related to COVID-19, library officials announced Tuesday. The library will be deep cleaned and sanitized while closed, officials said in a news release.

It is expected to reopen Monday.

All Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County staff are required to wear masks, and patrons are encouraged to wear them while visiting the libraries.

All branches have installed devices to neutralize allergens, viruses and other harmful airborne particles. The bipolar ionization devices were purchased with CARES Act pandemic relief money.

Ohio health officials want to remind everyone that free at-home COVID-19 testing kits are available at many local libraries.

The ODH purchased 2 million rapid at-home tests with the intention of making them easily available statewide.

The state has partnered with the Ohio Library Council and other entities to make the tests available to anyone for any reason.

Mahoning County public libraries are participating in the program. Officials said the library system is out of tests, but is working to get more.

Libraries are participating on a voluntary basis. Call your local branch to see if it is giving out the tests.

Since February, the state has made nearly 160,000 tests available for libraries to provide to their communities.
