COVID-19 cases increase by more than 4K in Ohio

The Ohio Department of Health on Sunday reported more than 4,000 new COVID-19 cases and 73 new hospitalizations statewide.

There were 4,266 new cases, bringing the total to 1,390,015 since the pandemic began.

State health officials reported a total of 6,284,039 Ohioans — 53.76 percent of the state’s population — had started the vaccination process, an increase of 4,099 from the previous day.

The Department of Health reported 224 new deaths Friday, bringing the total to 21,820.

The Ohio Department of Health released guidance on vaccine booster doses. The ODH gave the following recommendations:

• People 65 years and older or residents in long-term care settings should receive a booster shot and people ages 50 to 64 with certain underlying medical conditions should receive a booster shot.

• People ages 18 to 49 with certain underlying medical conditions may receive a booster shot based on their individual benefits and risks.

• People age 18 and older who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission because of their job or living in an institutional setting may receive a booster shot based on their individual benefits and risks.

Last week, Gov. Mike DeWine expressed concern over increasing hospitalizations among Ohioans 49 and younger, with nearly 400 the week of Sept. 5, saying the vast majority of patients were unvaccinated. He said in August, on average two people younger than 50 died of COVID-19 every day.

Ohio recorded 9,019 coronavirus cases Sept. 10, the most during the delta wave. It was the highest one-day total since Jan. 8 with 9,535 cases.

Ohio has seen 9,000 cases just 17 days in the entire pandemic, and only 10 days have seen more than 10,000. The state’s highest one-day total was set on Nov. 23 with 11,885 cases.
