COVID-19 cases in Ohio climb another 8,400

Ohio is on pace to break 1.3 million cases of COVID-19 today with 1,294,162 cases reported as of Saturday, an increase of about 8,400 from the day before, according to the Ohio Department of Health.

Friday, more than 9,000 new cases were reported for the first time since Jan. 8.

The 8,405 new cases statewide is well above the 21-day average of 5,494.

In the last week, Mahoning County has reported 798 new cases of the coronavirus, with 142 of those reported Saturday. The county’s total case count sits at 25,486, giving it the 11th-highest case count in the state. With 627 deaths reported as of Friday, Mahoning County has the ninth-most deaths, ODH statistics show.

Trumbull and Columbiana counties both reported about 540 new cases in the past week, bringing up their respective totals to 18,788 and 10,826. Trumbull County ranks 19th in cases and 11th in deaths, and Columbiana ranks 28th in cases and 21st in deaths, according to the ODH.

Meanwhile, just less than 52.8 percent of the state at least had started the vaccination process as of Saturday. Almost 51 percent of Mahoning County’s population has started the process, along with 48.74 percent of the population of Trumbull County and 41.32 percent of the population of Columbiana County.
