Campbell resident faces trial

WARREN — A Campbell man is expected to stand trial this week on felony charges connected to a shooting last fall in Warren.

Jury selection is expected to begin Monday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court in the trial of Tre’Mon Dukes, 23, of Tenney Avenue, Campbell. Potential jurors will be spaced according to COVID-19 guidelines in the large courtroom of Judge Andrew D. Logan.

After questioning by lawyers for both the prosecution and defense, a panel of 12 plus two alternates will be selected.

Dukes and a Warren man are charged in the Oct. 5, 2020, shooting in Warren that wounded an 18-year-old southwest side man.

Dukes faces two counts of aggravated robbery, two counts of felonious assault and having weapons under restrictions. Both the robbery and assault counts carry firearm specifications that would add additional prison time if jurors find him guilty.

Also facing the same charges is Mehki Walker, 20, of Martin Street SW, Warren.

Both robbery and assault counts carry firearm specifications for both men. If found guilty, both men would face additional prison time because of these specifications.

The latest charges are connected to an incident where 18-year-old Jody Hall of 1672 Sweetbrier Ave. SW, Warren, was wounded in a fight and shooting in the area of Charles Avenue and High Street NE.

According to the police report, officers arrived in the 100 block of Charles shortly after 9 p.m. where they saw a victim with a gunshot wound. Hall was transported to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, and he recovered.

At a hearing last week before Logan, Dukes refused a deal from prosecutors that would have given him eight years in prison, which would have included a mandatory three years served for a gun specification. Two of the charges would have been dismissed.

Now, Assistant Prosecutor Charles Morrow told the defendant he could face a potential indefinite sentence of 36 and 1/2 to 41 years in prison if a jury finds Dukes guilty of all five charges plus firearm specifications.

Federal court records show that Dukes was sentenced to 27 months in prison Aug. 10 after he earlier pleaded guilty to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Meanwhile, Trumbull court records show that Walker is scheduled for trial Oct. 4 on the same charges that Dukes faces. Walker, whose case is before Judge Peter J. Kontos, also is facing felony charges for a November 2020 incident in which he is accused of shooting at law enforcement officers in a chase through the west side of Warren.

Hall was indicted earlier this month on charges of aggravated robbery and felonious assault, both with firearm specifications, and one felony count of receiving stolen property, according to a grand jury report. Hall is accused in an afternoon shooting Feb. 11 in the 200 block of Belmont Street NW in Warren in which a 30-year-old West Market Street man received gunshot wounds to the neck, shoulder and arm.
