Young woman shot to death early Sunday

YOUNGSTOWN — A woman in her 20s was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds at 3204 Southern Blvd. on the South Side on Sunday morning.

Police were alerted at 5:06 a.m. to gunfire in that area through its ShotSpotter system, which notifies police of gunfire on the city’s South Side.

When ambulance personnel arrived, they declared the woman dead. The Youngstown Police Department and Mahoning County Coroner’s Office are investigating.

The building where the woman was found appears to be both commercial and residential and is about a block north of St. Dominic Church, which is at the corner of East Lucius Avenue and Southern Boulevard.

If ruled a homicide, the death will be the 23rd of the year in the city, which had 28 homicides in 2020.

Tips leading to an arrest and prosecution in the case are eligible for a monetary reward, the Youngstown Police Department states in a press release. To provide information, call Crime Stoppers at 330-746-CLUE or 330-742-8YPD. Tips may be left anonymously.

It is the latest in a string of shooting deaths in the city, including two double homicides this month.

On Tuesday, Ayanna Mills, 49, and her son, Brandon Bell, 28, were found shot inside a home in the 1200 block of Salt Springs Road around 10 a.m. Mills was pronounced dead at the scene and Bell was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where he died several hours later, according to police.

A warrant has been issued for Jabrae L. Perry, 44, on charges of aggravated murder and complicity to aggravated murder. Police said they believe the two shootings are domestic related and Perry has mental health issues.

On Aug. 18, Persayus Davis-May, 10, was found shot to death, presumably by a stray bullet, inside her Samuel Avenue home on the South Side around 2:20 a.m. Three adults also were shot inside the home, but survived.

Around the same time, Michael Callahan, 40, was found shot to death inside a pickup truck that crashed into a utility pole at the corner of South and Palmer avenues, about 1.3 miles away from where Persayus was slain. No arrests have been made in either of the Aug. 18 shootings.
