Valley adds to high rate of COVID-19 transmission

Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana, like a majority of Ohio’s counties, are among areas with substantial COVID-19 transmission, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Mahoning and Trumbull were in that category. Columbiana was at high transmission late last week, largely because of a backlog of cases from previous months being counted in one day, and then were lowered a day later.

But the three counties were considered substantial transmission areas Monday by the CDC without the backlog. The CDC counted new cases reported between July 26 and Sunday.

Those in substantial transmission counties are asked by the CDC to wear face masks while indoors, including people fully vaccinated. But it is only a recommendation and Gov. Mike DeWine has said a number of times he doesn’t plan to reinstate the state’s mask mandate.

To be considered a substantial transmission area, a county has to have 50 to 99.99 new cases per 100,000 people during the seven-day period or a positivity rate between 8 and 9.99 percent.

Mahoning ranked the highest of the three area counties at 71.68 cases per 100,000 residents with Trumbull at 65.67 and Columbiana at 61.84, according to the CDC.

Of Ohio’s 88 counties, 50 are in the substantial transmission level with another 17 at the high level, which requires a county to have at least 100 new cases per 100,000 residents or at least a 10 percent positivity rate during the past week.
