Ohio vaccination rate hits 50%

The Ohio Department of Health reported 1,413 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, bringing the total to 1,142,330 statewide since the pandemic began.

According to the ODH website, the number is again higher than the 21-day reported case average.

State health officials reported Ohio’s vaccination rate finally has surpassed 50 percent as 50.01 percent of people have received at least one dose, which is 5,845,986 people. However, the statewide percentage of those who have completed the vaccination process is 46.46 percent.

Mahoning County’s vaccination rate is 48.48 percent, while Trumbull is at 46.21 percent and Columbiana is at 39.12 percent. Those numbers reflect those who have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

Delaware County has the highest vaccination rate in Ohio, with 64.27 percent having at least one dose and 60.98 percent completing the process, according to ODH statistics.

Twelve of Ohio’s other 88 counties have crossed the 50 percent threshold for those who have received at least one dose of the vaccine: Cuyahoga (55.2),Erie (59.5), Franklin (54.2), Geauga (54), Hamilton (52.5), Lake (56.9), Lorain (53.4), Medina (55.1), Ottawa (54.4), Summit (54), Warren (54.5) and Wood (53.9). However, only nine of those have reached 50 percent for vaccinations completed: Cuyahoga, Franklin, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Ottawa, Warren and Wood.

The county with the lowest vaccination rate is Holmes County at 15.9 percent. The county is referred to as “Amish country” and is home to popular Amish tourism areas such as Walnut Creek and Sugar Creek. The county with the next lowest vaccination rate is Adams County in southern Ohio at 28.29 percent, according to the ODH.

Mahoning County reported 17 new cases Sunday, for a total of 23,008. There have been 1,096 hospitalizations and 615 deaths.

Fifteen new cases were reported in Trumbull County for a total of 17,070, with 1,270 hospitalizations and 493 deaths.

Columbiana County notched eight new cases for a total of 9,340, with 518 hospitalizations and 236 deaths.

ODH reported 26 deaths Friday, bringing the total to 20,556. The state is updating the total number of deaths only after death certificates have been processed, usually twice a week.

During a news conference Friday, Gov. Mike DeWine said Ohio is split between the vaccinated and the unvaccinated, and he encouraged all Ohioans to get on board with the CDC’s recommendation to protect themselves against COVID-19.

As the more contagious delta variant of COVID-19 sweeps through Ohio, data shows younger people are making up a larger share of cases because their age groups are the state’s least vaccinated, health officials said last week.
