The Mahoning Valley notched nearly 100 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday. Mahoning County leads the pack at 41, Trumbull recording 38 and Columbiana adding 19, according to the Ohio Department of Health.
Ohio ended the week with more new COVID-19 cases reported than it had in six months at 16,865. The state added 2,460 cases on Saturday, extending its streak of more than 1,000 newly reported cases to 12 straight days, including seven that had more than 2,000 new cases reported. The state exceeded 3,200 cases Wednesday and Thursday.
COVID-19 case numbers in Ohio have increased by nearly eight times the amount from four weeks ago as the state is going through its worst stretch in more than six months.
The delta variant among the unvaccinated, which spreads quickly, is almost entirely to blame for the increase, said Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff, Ohio Department of Health's chief medical officer.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention list 66 counties, including Columbiana, as high COVID-19 transmission areas and another 20, including Mahoning and Trumbull, as substantial transmission counties. Only two counties in the state are listed by the CDC as moderate risk areas.
The 2,460 new COVID-19 cases reported Saturday is up from the daily average of 1,723 for the past 21 days, according to the ODH.
Mahoning County ranks 11th out of the state's 88 counties for the number of cases at 23,264. Trumbull County is 16th at 17,284 cases and Columbiana is 27th at 9,484 cases.
