Teen pleads ‘true’ in March 31 shooting

Girl, 13, hit in leg while in bed

YOUNGSTOWN — One of the two juveniles charged in the 2 a.m. March 31 drive-by shooting on East Avondale Avenue that hit a girl, 13, in the leg while she was in bed pleaded guilty Monday, while an adult in the case went on trial in adult court.

Kasean R. Wilkerson, 16, pleaded “true” Monday before Judge Theresa Dellick of Mahoning County Juvenile Court to felonious assault and discharging a firearm at or into a habitation, school or safety zone. Both charges carry five-year specifications for a drive-by shooting and three-year gun specifications.

A Youngstown police report indicated that Wilkerson admitted to being the shooter. The home was hit at least 10 times by the gunfire, Youngstown police said.

The felonious assault conviction carries a one-year sentence in the Ohio Department of Youth Services. Coupled with the five-year specification, Wilkerson apparently will be confined in a DYS facility until he is 21, said Wes Skeels, Mahoning County Juvenile Court administrator.

Because Wilkerson is a resident of Trumbull County, a judge in the Trumbull County Juvenile Court will carry out the sentencing, Skeels said.

Youngstown police made arrests in a car shortly after the shooting. Wilkerson later admitted to being the one who fired the gun, a police report states.

Youngstown police said an officer who was in the area learned the vehicle involved in the shooting was a white sport utility vehicle with pinstriping, then spotted a white Chevrolet Trailblazer at a stop sign at Dickson Street and South Avenue.

The vehicle attempted to get onto Interstate 680 but stopped after the officer got behind the vehicle with lights and siren.

The other juvenile charged in the case, Xavier Hile, 16, of Buckeye Circle in Youngstown, also was scheduled for a hearing Monday in juvenile court, but that hearing was postponed to July 29. Hile faces the same charges as Wilkerson.

Hile was driving, Jana M. Cox, 25, of York Avenue in Warren, was in the front passenger seat, and Wilkerson was in the back seat, police said. All three were escorted out of the vehicle. An officer closed a passenger door and heard the sound of a bullet shell casing hitting the ground and found it next to the door.

Officers also found a loaded handgun under the driver’s seat and two more shell casings outside of the car.

Youngstown police Chief Carl Davis spoke about the shooting at a news conference later March 31, saying the victim was “at home in her bed when she was struck by a bullet from the gunfire that struck the home.”

Students and staff at Taft Elementary School, which is also on East Avondale Avenue and close to where the shooting occurred, posted a video the following month called “We Are Peace — We Are Taft” that asked the community to “please stop the violence.”

Meanwhile, Cox went on trial Monday before Judge John Durkin of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. Durkin is hearing the case without a jury. Testimony lasted throughout the morning and will resume today.

Cox is charged with discharging a firearm on or near prohibited premises, improperly discharging a firearm into a habitation or a school safety zone, felonious assault and improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle. Some of the charges also carry gun specifications that could add extra time to her sentence if she is convicted.
