POLAND — A celebration will take place Saturday for the 225th anniversary of Poland Township.

The event is being planned by Poland Township and the Poland Historical Society, and will be at the township park, 7400 Moore Road, beginning at 11 a.m.

The program at noon will feature Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts presenting the flag, and the national anthem will be sung by Renee Burnett, Poland Historical Society President Laurie Fox said.

“Bill Barrow, of the Early Settlers Association, will present a new historical marker commemorating Poland as Town 1 Range 1 of the Connecticut Western Reserve in 1796 ,” Fox said. “The program also will include a brief history of Poland Township and the township park by local officials.”

Following the program, refreshments provided by Poland Township will be served. Fox said donations for the refreshments will help support the park and the Poland Historical Society.

Among the activities planned for Saturday are music all day with DJ Kim Carson, a Poland Township emergency vehicles display, ATA Martial Arts karate demonstrations, a craft for kids and a walking reading adventure provided by the public library, a narrated nature walk through the trails at the park by Kyle Filicky, a scavenger hunt and face painting organized by Poland’s cross-country team, a toddler activity area, and a 50-50 raffle.

“Members of the Poland Historical Society, dressed to portray Poland’s early settlers, will be available for photos at a booth provided by Pioneer Trails Tree Farm,” Fox said.

The Poland Lions Club will continue to collect plastic bags and wraps to be recycled to be made into another bench. The park already has two benches made from the collection, and the club hopes to keep the program going. Members will have a collection site set up during this celebration to accept clean plastic bags. The type of plastic that will be accepted includes grocery bags, the wrapping around cases of water and pop, bread wrappers, cereal bags, salt bags and bubble wrap. Other types of plastic will not be accepted for this project.

The Poland Historical Society also will have a Poland history display and will be selling locally themed items. All proceeds help support the society’s efforts to preserve Poland’s history and maintain the Little Red Schoolhouse, built in the center of the township in 1858.
