Ohio exceeds 1,000 daily cases for first time in 2 months

For the first time in more than two months, Ohio exceeded 1,000 reported COVID-19 cases in a single day.

The 1,317 cases reported Tuesday by the Ohio Department of Health is the first time the state went over 1,000 since 1,208 were reported May 20. It’s also the most cases reported in a single day in Ohio since May 12 with 1,449.

The delta variant among the unvaccinated, which spreads quickly, largely is to blame for the recent increase in COVID-19 cases in the state, Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff, ODH’s chief medical officer, said.

Just three weeks ago, Ohio was averaging about 260 cases per day.

That has more than doubled with the 21-day average Tuesday at 537.

The state had a total of 1,123,964 COVID-19 cases as of Tuesday with 1,090,556 presumed recovered and 20,490 deaths.

The ODH usually provides death information on Tuesdays and Fridays.

There were 23 additional deaths reported since Friday in Ohio, including one each in Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

Mahoning County had 22,710 total COVID-19 cases as of Tuesday with 21,896 presumed recovered and 613 deaths, according to the ODH.

Trumbull County had 16,801 total COVID-19 cases as of Tuesday with 16,121 presumed recovered and 492 deaths.

Columbiana County had 9,204 total COVID-19 cases as of Tuesday with 8,888 presumed recovered and 236 deaths.

VACCINATIONS

There were 5,726,757 people, 48.99 percent of the state’s population, who at least had started getting inoculated as of 6 a.m. Tuesday, including 9,336 in the previous 24 hours, according to the ODH.

That’s the second-highest number of Ohioans starting the vaccination process since June 11 with 10,072, according to ODH statistics. The only date with a higher number since then is last Friday with 9,399.

In Mahoning County, 47.53 percent of the population (108,694 people) had received at least one dose, while 45.23 percent of the population in Trumbull County (89,536 people) and 38.26 percent in Columbiana County (38,980 people) had as of 6 a.m. Tuesday, according to the ODH.

There were 5,351,697 people, 45.78 percent of the state’s population, who finished the vaccinations as of 6 a.m. Tuesday, including 4,171 in the prior 24 hours.

The number finishing their vaccinations Tuesday is far below average for the past month.

In Mahoning County, 44.05 percent of the population (100,734 people) had completed the process, while 41.49 percent of the population in Trumbull (82,132 people) and 36.01 percent of the population in Columbiana (36,683 people) had as of 6 a.m. Tuesday.
