No foul play in motel death

Boardman PD investigating

BOARDMAN — The Mahoning County Coroner’s office has ruled out foul play in the death of a man with addresses in Cleveland and Youngstown, who was found dead in bed at 11:05 a.m. Tuesday in his motel room.

An autopsy was conducted, and a ruling on the cause and manner of death is awaiting toxicology results, said Theresa Gaetano, coroner’s investigator.

The motel manager at the Boardman Inn, 7109 Market St., said the facility cleans the rooms every third day for residents staying there three days or longer, a police report states. He tried to contact the resident by telephone and then by knocking on the door but got no response, he told police.

He later used a key to enter and found the man face up in bed. His feet were on the floor. The man was wearing gym shorts and a white T-shirt. There was blood in his facial area near his nose, but no other signs of foul play were seen, Boardman police stated in a report.

Several prescription bottles were found on the dresser with the man’s name on them. The Mahoning County Coroner’s office sent an investigator to the motel to investigate then had the body removed.

The man checked into the motel July 17 and returned later that day with an unknown woman who exited the room with a black, plastic garbage bag and walked toward a large garbage receptacle area, the report states. A moment later, she left in the man’s vehicle.

On July 18, a woman called asking if her husband was staying there. The manager said the motel does not give out that information. The manager said the man told him that day that he should not tell anyone, including his wife or girlfriend, that he was staying there.

A cellphone in the room was taken as evidence.
