Mahoning County nursing homes and assisted-living facilities now have only seven COVID-19 cases, dropping from 12 last week as facilities correct their numbers and cases fall.

One Boardman facility has listed the same three cases (one patient case, two staff cases) since early May, indicating that its numbers are apparently not up to date, county health officials have said. The three Boardman cases are among the seven listed on the Ohio Department of Health website this week.

The only reason a facility would list the same cases for more than a week or two is that the facility has failed to contact Mahoning County Public Health to report that its cases have dropped to zero, Tracy Styka, community health education specialist, said last month.

Mahoning County Public Health recently notified Mahoning County long-term care facilities such as nursing homes to ask them to update their numbers because of some numbers that appeared to be no longer accurate.

Neither Trumbull nor Columbiana county facilities have any current cases listed. Among all Ohio nursing homes, there are 72 patient cases and 61 staff cases. The same number of COVID-19 deaths are reported this week as last week — 281 in Mahoning County, 157 in Trumbull and 79 in Mahoning.

Meanwhile, the number of virus cases at the three area prisons have remained at zero for the second straight week. The facilities are the Northeast Ohio Correctional Center and Ohio State Penitentiary, both in Youngstown, and Trumbull Correctional Institution in Leavittsburg.

Among prisons across the state, there are currently only two active inmate cases and four staff cases.
