The state had 579 new COVID-19 cases reported Thursday, the most for a single day in nearly a month.

It was only a little less than the three previous days combined: 624 total from Monday to Wednesday.

Thursday’s number was the highest for a day since June 4 when there were 621 cases, which also was the last day in Ohio that exceeded 500 new COVID-19 cases.

That breaks a streak of 26 straight days with less than 500 new cases in the state.

The 579 new cases Thursday was more than double the daily average of 278 for the past 21 days, according to the Ohio Department of Health.

The state had a total of 1,111,903 COVID-19 cases as of Thursday with 1,084,586 presumed recovered. There were 20,309 deaths as of Tuesday.

While cases were atypically high in Ohio, they remained low in the Mahoning Valley. Trumbull and Columbiana counties each reported only one new case while Mahoning had six new cases Thursday.

Mahoning County had 22,421 total COVID-19 cases as of Thursday with 21,674 presumed recovered and 604 deaths, according to the ODH.

Trumbull County had 16,591 total COVID-19 cases as of Thursday with 15,981 presumed recovered and 485 deaths.

Columbiana County had 9,053 total COVID-19 cases as of Thursday with 8,788 presumed recovered and 234 deaths.

VACCINATIONS

There were 5,578,940 people, 47.73 percent of the state’s population, who had at least started getting inoculated as of 6 a.m. Thursday, including 9,208 in the previous 24 hours, according to the ODH.

In Mahoning County, 46.41 percent of the population (106,121 people) had received at least one dose with 44.1 percent of the population in Trumbull County (87,313 people) and 37.37 percent in Columbiana County (38,078 people) as of 6 a.m. Thursday.

There were 5,196,046 people, 44.45 percent of the state’s population,who finished the vaccinations as of 6 a.m. Thursday, including 12,383 in the prior 24 hours.

In Mahoning County, 42.78 percent of the population (97,795 people) had completed the process while 40.32 percent of the population in Trumbull (79,823 people) and 35.1 percent of the population in Columbiana (35,761 people) had as of 6 a.m. Thursday.
