Warren nursing home sees spike of 10 cases this week

WARREN — White Oak Manor nursing home on Ridge Avenue in Warren saw a spike in COVID-19 cases with eight among patients and two among staff this week.

The facility had no cases the previous week.

White Oak Manor has had 11 cases among patients and has had 17 staff cases dating back to April 15, 2020, according to data reported this week on the Ohio Department of Health website.

The Liberty Health Care Center nursing home on Churchill Hubbard Road in Liberty Township also appeared on the list this week. The facility has one current patient case and no staff cases.

It means Trumbull County has two facilities with cases this week after going several weeks without any.

Columbiana County facilities continue to have no COVID-19 cases.

The listing for Mahoning County facilities continues to show about 30 cases, but most of the facilities listed have had the same number of cases each week for several weeks, suggesting the data is not being updated and possibly is incorrect.

Tracy Styka, Mahoning County Public Health’s community health education specialist, said in situations where the same numbers appear for several weeks, those most likely are situations in which the facility has not notified the health department when its cases drop to zero.

She said a health department official reminded Mahoning County nursing homes this week to notify the health department when its cases drop to zero. Mahoning County Public Health receives the data from local nursing homes and provides that data to the Ohio Department of Health, which posts the numbers on the ODH website.

The number of COVID-19 cases at area prisons fluctuated a little bit this week, with the private Northeast Ohio Correctional Center in Youngstown having five staff cases this week, up one from last week.

The Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown and Trumbull Correctional Institution in Leavittsburg both had one staff case. None of the three prisons is reporting any inmate cases this week.
