Wading into pool repairs at Northside
Northside swimming still on hold
YOUNGSTOWN — Sitting idle a whole extra year took a toll on the city’s Northside Pool.
Multiple parts had to be replaced and other work had to be done before the pool would be ready to reopen this year.
The pool’s original opening date was June 6, but that was pushed back by a shortage of chlorine and a delay on parts for repair work. The pool did not open at all last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dawn Turnage, Youngstown parks and recreation director, said Tuesday the pool’s opening date is now Monday. A large part for the backwash system arrived from Florida in the past few days, and it was installed.
The smaller of the two pools, the play pool for smaller children, was being filled with water Tuesday. But it will take a few days to make sure the chlorine levels are correct and tested, Turnage said.
Two workers were making repairs to the Belmont Avenue pool Tuesday morning. Kevin Lyden of KT Lyden Construction of Youngstown assisted Larry Lindolf of the Youngstown Parks and Recreation Department in replacing a grate on the bottom of the play pool.
Then Lyden showed a reporter the pump house, where the water is treated. He showed the old and replaced part of the backflow system and a pipe associated with the play pool that was replaced. Lyden said he thinks the repairs are complete.
Turnage said the price of admission is $2 for children and $3 for adults. The hours of operation will be 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday with Sunday hours a possibility, Turnage said.
There are plans to have music by the pool, and there may be family movie nights, she said.
