Teen charged in shooting death

Boy shot to death in city

YOUNGSTOWN — Police detectives have charged a 16-year-old boy with reckless homicide and tampering with evidence in the shooting death of another 16-year-old boy Thursday afternoon.

The deceased is identified by the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office as Malik Stewart. The suspect’s name has not been made public.

The shooting happened in an apartment at 2758 Hammaker Ave., the coroner’s office said in a news release. That’s in the Brier Hill neighborhood on the North Side.

The teen charged was taken in for questioning immediately after the shooting, according to a Youngstown Police Department news release. Detectives said the boy was charged after conferring with the Mahoning County juvenile prosecutor.

Police responded to the apartment at 1:30 p.m. and found Stewart dead of a gunshot wound.

The killing was the 13th of the year in Youngstown. The previous homicide was Sunday when police found Kesean Bunch, 23, shot to death in the 2500 block of Glenwood Avenue on the South Side.

Khayree C. Williams, 24, is now charged with aggravated murder in the shooting that killed Bunch. Youngstown police filed the charge Friday in Youngstown Municipal Court.

Bunch was declared dead at the scene after being found by police officers with one gunshot wound.

About 1:45 p.m. Sunday, Youngstown police were called to the 2500 block of Glenwood Avenue to investigate a shooting. Officers found Bunch lying in a rear parking lot.

A Mahoning County coroner’s news release stated that an autopsy was conducted at the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office, but the results were not disclosed.
