Stimulus spending starts in Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN — A public presentation on how the Mahoning County commissioners plan to spend $44 million in federal stimulus money probably will not happen until July, but the commissioners may begin to allocate some of it as early as next week.

The commissioners on Thursday approved a resolution setting aside $2 million of the money.

Commissioner Anthony Traficanti and county Administrator Audrey Tillis said a couple of urgent projects have come to the commissioners’ attention that need funding as early as next week. The resolution makes the $2 million available so it can be allocated.

Traficanti did not say what type of projects are going to be funded next week.

The commissioners had planned to have a news conference in the first half of June to discuss their plans for how to spend the $44 million, said Traficanti, chairman of the commissioners’ board. But last week, Traficanti said the presentation most likely will not happen until July.

The commissioners have plans to meet with area economic-develoment agencies before deciding and announcing their plans for the funds, he said.

Traficanti said last month the $44 million can be used to fund sanitary sewer lines, upgrades to wastewater treatment plants and to replace lost revenue as a result of COVID-19, as examples.

Some money will be directed to nonprofit organizations, he said.
