Ohio’s new cases fall to lowest since June 2020

Ohio had the fewest number of new weekly COVID-19 cases reported in a year.

The Ohio Department of Health reported 2,416 new cases in the state for the week ending Saturday.

The last time weekly cases were this low was the week of June 7 to 13, 2020, with 2,162 cases. It’s also the fourth fewest cases for a week in the state since April 2020, shortly after the pandemic started.

For the eighth straight day, the state reported fewer than 500 new COVID-19 cases with 385 on Saturday.

It’s been a year since there were at least this many days in a row with cases reported below the 500 mark. That was 19 days between May 29 and June 16, 2020.

The 385 new cases Saturday is down from the daily average of 485 for the past 21 days, according to the ODH. It’s the first time in a year that the 21-day average dropped below 500.

The state had a total of 1,106,796 COVID-19 cases as of Saturday with 1,075,652 presumed recovered.

The ODH provides death information on Tuesdays and Fridays. There were 20,091 deaths reported Friday.

Mahoning County had 22,327 total COVID-19 cases as of Saturday with 21,404 presumed recovered and 601 deaths, according to the ODH.

Trumbull County had 16,520 total COVID-19 cases as of Saturday with 15,806 presumed recovered and 479 deaths.

Columbiana County had 9,016 total COVID-19 cases as of Saturday with 8,703 presumed recovered and 230 deaths.

VACCINATIONS

The number of vaccinations continues to be slow as it has for the past two months.

There were 5,446,889 people, 46.6 percent of the state’s population, who had at least started getting inoculated as of 6 a.m. Saturday, including 12,539 in the previous 24 hours, according to the ODH.

In Mahoning County, 45.24 percent of the population (103,461 people) had received at least one dose with 43.38 percent of the population in Trumbull County (85,880 people) and 36.83 percent in Columbiana County (37,523 people) as of 6 a.m. Saturday, according to the ODH.

There were 4,894,519 people, 41.87 percent of the state’s population,who finished the vaccinations as of 6 a.m. Saturday, including 24,806 in the prior 24 hours.

In Mahoning County, 40.29 percent of the population (92,140 people) had completed the process while 38.13 percent of the population in Trumbull (75,491 people) and 33.56 percent of the population in Columbiana (34,191 people) had as of 6 a.m. Saturday.

The deadline for the state’s fourth of five $1 million drawings and college scholarships is 11:59 p.m. tonight. To be eligible, a person must have at least started the vaccination process by that deadline.
