Man forced to jump from roof

Blaze destroys home; 2 sent to St. E’s for observation, injuries

Youngstown firefighters assess the damage to a home on Jacobs Road in Youngstown on Wednesday afternoon. The home was a total loss, the Youngstown Fire Department said. Firefighters were able to rescue the family’s dog.

YOUNGSTOWN — Victor Barich was cutting the grass at the home he rents on Jacobs Road near the Trumbull County line when he saw smoke coming from the front of the house around noon.

He got off the tractor and went to get his wife, Regina, and son, Matthew, out of the house, but he could not get in the back door.

Regina got out safely, but Matthew, 26, was in a rear bedroom on the second floor and came out of the bedroom window and onto the front porch.

By this time, flames and smoke were coming up around Matthew.

“He said, ‘Get me a ladder,'” Victor said. “I said, ‘I can’t. I don’t have time.'”

Matthew didn’t want to jump to the ground. The drop was quite far, but he did, and possibly twisted his ankle, Victor said.

Matthew also had some burns on his hands. He and Regina were transported to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for observation and for minor injuries.

Youngstown firefighters saved the family’s dog and put out the fire. Some of the floors in the home started to collapse, Youngstown Fire Department Battalion Chief John Lightly said. The home was a total loss, and the family was going to get help from the Red Cross to find a place to stay.

“Lucky I was here to help my wife and son out of the house,” said Victor, who has lived in the home for about eight years.

In addition to damaging the home, the fire damaged a van parked close to the house and damaged Victor’s riding mower and another car in the driveway.

Lightly said it appears the fire started in the front of the house in the porch and front-room area. “Right now, it appears to be accidental,” Lightly said of the cause.
