Not since the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic has the state registered as few new daily cases as it did Monday.

The Ohio Department of Health reported 178 new cases Monday. That’s the fewest cases reported since late March 2020, shortly after the pandemic started.

Also, only 2,813 Ohioans started the vaccination process between 6 a.m. Sunday and 6 a.m. Monday, the least amount since 2,401 on Jan. 3, according to ODH statistics.

The state received its first shipment of COVID-19 vaccines Dec. 14 and had a very limited supply and severely restricted who received it for the first six weeks. It’s been available to anyone at least 12 years of age since May 12.

The 178 new cases Monday is down from the daily average of 446 for the past 21 days, according to the ODH. There were only 10 new cases Monday in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties combined.

The state had a total of 1,107,225 COVID-19 cases as of Monday with 1,075,774 presumed recovered.

The ODH provides death information on Tuesdays and Fridays. There were 20,091 deaths reported Friday.

Mahoning County had 22,332 total COVID-19 cases as of Monday with 21,441 presumed recovered and 601 deaths, according to the ODH.

Trumbull County had 16,527 total COVID-19 cases as of Monday with 15,831 presumed recovered and 479 deaths.

Columbiana County had 9,023 total COVID-19 cases as of Monday with 8,718 presumed recovered and 230 deaths.

VACCINATIONS

There were 5,454,295 people, 46.66 percent of the state’s population, who had at least started getting inoculated as of 6 a.m. Monday, including 2,813 in the previous 24 hours, according to the ODH.

In Mahoning County, 45.31 percent of the population (103,610 people) had received at least one dose with 43.43 percent of the population in Trumbull County (85,982 people) and 36.89 percent in Columbiana County (37,586 people) as of 6 a.m. Monday, according to the ODH.

There were 4,921,190 people, 42.1 percent of the state’s population,who finished the vaccinations as of 6 a.m. Monday, including 8,705 in the prior 24 hours.

In Mahoning County, 40.46 percent of the population (92,526 people) had completed the process while 38.34 percent of the population in Trumbull (75,896 people) and 33.85 percent of the population in Columbiana (34,483 people) had as of 6 a.m. Monday.
