After weeks of being in the top six Ohio counties with the highest rate of COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents, Mahoning dropped to 18th this week.

Meanwhile, Trumbull, which was in the top 15 counties for several weeks, before going to 33rd last week, was at 53rd this week among the state’s 88 counties for COVID-19 cases per 100,000 residents.

Columbiana County, which was at 48th last week, moved up to 33rd this week.

Ohio has seen a significant decline in the number of COVID-19 cases per 100,000 in the past month.

The state average, for the two weeks between June 10 and Wednesday, was 21.4 cases per 100,000 residents, according to the Ohio Department of Health. There are 10 counties in Ohio with single-digit cases per 100,000 residents and Van Wert is at 0.

The state average was 26.8 cases last week, 39.1 cases two weeks ago, 54.9 cases three weeks ago and 82.3 cases four weeks ago.

Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties also have experienced big reductions in cases per 100,000 during that time.

But Mahoning was in the top six for six straight weeks before going to 18th this week.

Mahoning still had more cases per 100,000 people than the state average this week at 26.7.

It had 39.4 cases last week for the sixth-highest rate, 66 cases per 100,000 two weeks ago for the fourth-highest, and 100.1 cases three weeks ago for the fifth-highest.

Trumbull has typically had more cases per 100,000 than the state average and until last week, it was in the top 15 for four straight weeks.

It was down to 53rd in the state this week with 18.2 cases, below the state average, compared to 33rd last week with 27.8 cases. It was 14th two weeks ago with 54.6 cases and 13th three weeks ago with 71.7 cases.

Columbiana had a decline in cases this week but not as big as other counties in Ohio.

It was 33rd this week with 21.6 cases per 100,000, slightly above the state average.

Last week, Columbiana was 48th with 24.5 cases, and was 20th two weeks ago with 47.1 cases and 21st three weeks ago with 62.8 cases.

The ODH measures cases per 100,000 residents to provide a fair comparison among counties because total case numbers would result in more-populous counties ranking higher.

COVID-19 DATA

The 292 new cases Friday is down from the daily average of 300 for the past 21 days, according to the ODH.

The state had a total of 1,110,292 COVID-19 cases as of Friday with 1,082,415 presumed recovered and 20,281 deaths.

The ODH provides death information on Tuesdays and Fridays.

There was an increase of 68 deaths since Tuesday including two in Trumbull, one in Mahoning and three in Columbiana counties.

Mahoning County had 22,399 total COVID-19 cases as of Friday with 21,619 presumed recovered and 603 deaths, according to the ODH.

Trumbull County had 16,569 total COVID-19 cases as of Friday with 15,946 presumed recovered and 485 deaths.

Columbiana County had 9,043 total COVID-19 cases as of Friday with 8,774 presumed recovered and 233 deaths.

VACCINATIONS

There were 5,542,295 people, 47.41 percent of the state’s population, who had at least started getting inoculated as of 6 a.m. Friday, including 7,836 in the previous 24 hours, according to the ODH.

In Mahoning County, 46.13 percent of the population (105,495 people) had received at least one dose with 43.82 percent of the population in Trumbull County (86,755 people) and 37.21 percent in Columbiana County (37,906 people) as of 6 a.m. Friday, according to the ODH.

There were 5,108,728 people, 43.71 percent of the state’s population,who finished the vaccinations as of 6 a.m. Friday, including 11,443 in the prior 24 hours.

In Mahoning County, 41.93 percent of the population (95,883 people) had completed the process while 39.56 percent of the population in Trumbull (78,316 people) and 34.63 percent of the population in Columbiana (35,284 people) had as of 6 a.m. Friday.
