COVID-19 cases continue to fall

The Ohio Department of Health reported Sunday the number of new COVID-19 cases dipped below 270.

As of Sunday, the ODH reported 1,104,648 cases since the pandemic began, an increase of 268 since Saturday, well below the 21-day average of 655.

Mahoning County has a total of 22,263 cases and 595 deaths. The county added five cases on Sunday. It ranks 11th out of the state’s 88 counties for the number of cases.

There have been 16,483 cases in Trumbull County and 478 deaths. The county added eight cases on Sunday. It ranks 17th in the state for number of cases.

Columbiana County has 9,000 cases and 229 deaths. It added three cases on Sunday and ranks 27th in the state.

Also Sunday, ODH reported that a total of 5,380,145 Ohioans — 46.03 percent of the state’s population — have started the vaccination process. That’s an increase of 10,109 from the previous day.

On Friday, the Department of Health reported 57 deaths, bringing the state total to 19,980. The state is updating the total number of deaths only after death certificates have been processed, usually twice per week. The number of deaths statewide likely will top 20,000 this week.

Gov. Mike DeWine’s office announced that as of Saturday, the state reached 49.5 onset cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 residents over the two-week period from May 22 to June 4. DeWine initially set the metric back in early March, saying it would need to reach 50 cases per 100,000 for state health orders to be lifted.

DeWine, however, lifted the health orders Wednesday while the state hovered just above 50 per 100,000.
