Austintown breaking and entering suspect arrested
AUSTINTOWN — A man suspected by police of breaking and entering at a township business was arrested on warrants.
Justin Davis, 33, of Irondale, was picked up by Salem police following a traffic stop Sunday afternoon and was transferred to Austintown police.
Davis was taken to Mahoning County jail and is being held on $7,500 bond, set by Judge Scott Hunter on Monday via video arraignment. Davis will appear at 9:30 a.m. June 30 for a preliminary hearing on felony charges of breaking and entering, theft and possessing criminal tools.
The warrants stem from a May 24 incident where Davis is accused of breaking into the Golden Food Mart, 4290 New Road, and taking cigarettes and $1,000 from the business around 1:38 a.m.
Police arrived at the store to find a window shattered with glass scattered toward the parking lot, a police report states. They also found empty Newport cigarette sliding trays empty and a bank bag on the ground.
Managers of the store showed police surveillance footage with a man, later identified as Davis, in a dark hooded sweatshirt, grey sweat pants, black shoes and blue gloves forcefully pulling open the doors and entering the business about 1:26 a.m.
The footage shows the man putting 50 to 75 packs of cigarettes in a bag and removing $1,000 from a money bag used for the lottery cash register. It also shows the man trying to leave the store, but the doors locked behind him after he entered. The report states the man took running starts at the doors to open but they would not and the man seemed to panic, dropping the bag of cigarettes.
The man then found a hammer, grabbed three cartons of cigarettes and broke the window, leaving two minutes after he arrived.
Shortly after the incident, police received a call about the man coming to a Paisley Avenue address about 2:30 a.m. The occupant of the house said the man, later identified as Davis, asked for a ride “down the road,” the report states. The occupant told police a cab was called for Davis but he was gone when it arrived. The occupant also told police Davis had a cut on his head, which he said he got in a fight earlier.
Police asked if Davis smoked cigarettes and the occupant said he smoked Newport brand.
A few hours later, a deputy with the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office was called to Sheetz, 4585 Boardman Canfield Road, regarding Davis being at the gas station. When the deputy arrived, Davis was already gone. He was not located until he was arrested by Salem police.
