With the number of people getting COVID-19 inoculations in the state down in the past two months, Ohio has about 200,000 unused Johnson & Johnson vaccines that will go bad June 23 if not used by then.

“For Ohioans who have been waiting to get their vaccine, I urge you to take action now,” Gov. Mike DeWine said. “The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is one of those options. It is safe and effective and only requires one shot.”

The state doesn’t have any legal options for sending the vaccine to other states or other countries, according to DeWine’s office.

The Ohio Department of Health is directing all providers to follow a first-in, first-out process for vaccines to ensure doses with the soonest expiration dates are used first.

The state has not received any Johnson & Johnson doses since the week of May 10, according to Alicia Shoults, ODH spokeswoman.

The reduced demand resulted in the Mahoning Valley’s mass vaccination clinic site at the former Dillard’s in the Southern Park Mall in Boardman ending.

Instead, Mahoning County Public Health, which managed the site, is offering vaccinations at its Austintown office at 50 Westchester Ave.

The clinics are 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday and June 17 and 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 24. People can walk in or schedule an appointment online at mahoninghealth.org.

The 426 new cases Tuesday are down from the daily average of 605 for the past 21 days, according to the ODH.

The state had a total of 1,105,329 COVID-19 cases as of Tuesday with 1,072,071 presumed recovered and 20,021 deaths.

The ODH provides death information on Tuesdays and Fridays.

There was an increase of 41 deaths since Friday, including five in Mahoning County and one in Trumbull County.

Mahoning County had 22,286 total COVID-19 cases as of Tuesday with 21,259 presumed recovered and 600 deaths, according to the ODH.

Trumbull County had 16,495 total COVID-19 cases as of Tuesday with 15,738 presumed recovered and 479 deaths.

Columbiana County had 9,002 total COVID-19 cases as of Tuesday with 8,673 presumed recovered and 229 deaths.

VACCINATIONS

There were 5,398,252 people, 46.18 percent of the state’s population, who at least had started getting inoculated as of 6 a.m. Tuesday, including 12,797 in the previous 24 hours, according to the ODH.

In Mahoning County, 44.87 percent of the population (102,614 people) had received at least one dose with 43.02 percent of the population in Trumbull County (85,176 people) and 36.52 percent in Columbiana County (37,210 people) as of 6 a.m. Tuesday, according to the ODH.

There were 4,799,537 people, 41.06 percent of the state’s population,who finished the vaccination process as of 6 a.m. Tuesday, including 21,369 in the prior 24 hours.

In Mahoning County, 39.55 percent of the population (90,440 people) had completed the process, while 37.47 percent of the population in Trumbull (74,179 people) and 32.97 percent of the population in Columbiana (33,593 people) had as of 6 a.m. Tuesday.

The state’s third of five $1 million drawings for those who have received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine or at least one dose of Moderna or Pfizer will be 7:29 p.m. today.
