Valley seeing uptick at nursing care facilities

Nursing care cases rise for second week

YOUNGSTOWN — The number of COVID-19 cases among Mahoning County nursing homes and assisted-living facilities rose again this week, but they also rose among facilities across the state after weeks of dropping.

Five Mahoning County nursing homes continue to have at least three combined patient and staff cases, and the total number of cases among Mahoning County facilities rose from 36 last week to 39 this week — 14 among patients and 25 among staff.

The number of Mahoning County facilities with at least one case also rose from 17 facilities last week to 20 this week, according to Ohio Department of Health data.

Trumbull County facilities, however, dropped back down this week.

Addison Healthcare Nursing Home in Masury dropped from six patient cases last week to one this week. Trumbull County facilities have just three total cases this week after having 11 cases last week.

Columbiana County facilities again had no cases.

There were again no nursing home deaths recorded this week among Mahoning Valley nursing homes. There have been 275 in Mahoning County, 151 in Trumbull County and 79 in Columbiana County.

Across Ohio, the number of virus cases among patients rose this week after weeks of decline. There were 200 patient cases across the state this week, up 11 from last week. There were 309 staff cases this week, up nine from last week.

Staff cases at the Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown this week rose from two to eight, while inmate cases dropped from four to zero.

The number of staff cases at the private Northeast Ohio Correctional Center in Youngstown rose from zero to one, and inmate cases remained at zero.

The number of staff cases at the Trumbull Correctional Institution in Leavittsburg remained at one, and the number of inmate cases remained at zero.

In all of Ohio’s prisons, the number of staff cases of the virus dropped from 39 to 34 this week. The number of inmate cases rose from 15 to 20.
