State posts 2nd-lowest case total in 3 weeks

The Ohio Department of Health reported 985 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, far fewer than the 21-day state average of 1,693 and the second-lowest number of new cases reported in the last three weeks.

April 25 posted 873 cases.

The state has recorded 1,075,004 cases since the pandemic began.

Sunday, 56,553 hospitalizations were reported, which marked an increase of 64 — nearly half of the 21-day average.

Also reported Sunday, a total of 4,715,308 Ohioans — 40.34 percent of the state’s population — at least had started the vaccination process, according to ODH. That is an increase of 11,015 from Saturday.

In Trumbull County, 38.06 percent of the population (75,345 people) at least had started the vaccination process. In Mahoning County, the number is 39.94 percent (91,344 people) and in Columbiana County, it is 32.47 percent (33,078 people).

Statewide, 3,856,309 people — 32.99 percent — have completed the vaccination process, according to the ODH, an increase of 23,203 people since Saturday. In Trumbull County, 30.59 percent (60,561 people) have received both doses of the vaccine. In Mahoning County, 33.15 percent (75,802 people) have been vaccinated fully and in Columbiana County, 27.65 percent (28,175 people) are fully vaccinated.

The Department of Health reported 96 deaths Friday, bringing the state total to 19,284. The state is updating the total number of deaths only after death certificates have been processed, usually Tuesdays and Fridays.

Mahoning County added 38 cases Sunday for a total of 21,353 while hospitalizations (1,006) and deaths (585) remained the same.

Fourteen new cases were reported in Trumbull County for a total of 15,936. Two hospitalizations were reported, moving the total to 1,149. Deaths stayed at 463.

Columbiana County added 10 cases, increasing its total to 8,717. Hospitalizations and deaths remained the same at 482 and 229, respectively.
