State COVID-19 cases drop as vaccinations climb

The Ohio Department of Health reported 618 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, raising the state total to 1,090,894 cases.

The state has recorded 19,528 deaths. New death numbers are only released on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Mahoning County added 12 new cases for a total of 21,768 cases and 588 deaths. Fifteen new cases were reported in Trumbull County for a total of 16,174 with 468 deaths. Columbiana County has six new cases for a total of 8,875 with 229 deaths.

Also Sunday, ODH reported a total of 4,981,525 people — 42.62 percent of the state’s population — at least had started the vaccination process, an increase of 21,959 from the previous day.

The health department reported Mahoning County has 41.77 percent vaccinated, while Trumbull County has 39.83 percent and Columbiana County has 34.12 percent.

Last week Gov. Mike DeWine announced two incentives for teens and adults to get vaccinated: a $1 million drawing for adults who have received at least the first dose of the vaccine and the chance to win a full four-year scholarship to a state university for those 17 and younger.

DeWine reported for the last two weeks, the state has posted a rate of 119.9 cases per 100,000 people. In March, he set a target of 50 per 100,000 people before lifting health orders, but reversed course last week and said he will lift mask and social-distancing requirements June 2. However, individual businesses still may require masks and continue to operate at a decreased capacity.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced last week it was easing mask-wearing guidance indoors for fully vaccinated people. They now are allowed to stop wearing masks in most places but still must wear them in crowded settings such as buses and planes, as well as outdoors where large crowds are gathered such as sporting events and concerts.
