New Middletown police officer resigns

NEW MIDDLETOWN — Village police Sgt. Brooke E. McCon, 26, who last week pleaded guilty to drunken driving charges, has resigned from the department.

Village police Chief Jim Craven on Friday confirmed that McCon had turned in a short letter of resignation.

In Mahoning County Area Court in Boardman, McCon was sentenced on April 22 to either three days in jail or a driver’s intervention program. Her driver’s license is suspended for one year.

The New Middletown Police Department had placed McCon on unpaid administrative leave after the April 9 crash on Interstate 680 in Boardman that resulted in McCon being charged with operating a vehicle impaired. She refused field sobriety tests.

McCon’s vehicle was traveling north near the Boardman-Poland Road exit when she collided with a vehicle in front of her, causing McCon’s vehicle to catch fire. The driver of the other vehicle reported minor injuries.

A charge of failure to maintain assured clear distance against McCon was dismissed, and she was placed on one year of probation.

In late 2019, McCon was appointed sergeant and took over administrative duties for a time when former Chief Vince D’Egidio resigned.

Starting at $3.23/week.
