WARREN -- A Girard man was convicted by a Trumbull County jury on one of two counts of receiving stolen property.
Sherard Garner, 39, of 2258 Crestmont Drive, Girard, remains out on bond and will be sentenced by Common Pleas Judge Ronald J. Rice after a background investigation by the adult probation department. Garner could get probation or face from six to 18 months in prison.
The jury voted Monday to acquit on the first count of receiving stolen property.
Garner has been free on the court's pretrial release program in which defendants submit to periodic drug tests with the probation department.
The case against Garner was investigated in July 2019 by the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Sanders said. Reports said the case involved the sale of a stolen ATV with a vehicle identification number scraped off.
Assistant Prosecutor Ryan Sanders, working solo in his first criminal jury trial, called four witnesses in the one-day trial. The defense, led by Cleveland attorney Terry R. Gilbert of Cleveland, did not call any witnesses.
"I'd like to commend the hard work of Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers Larry Skaggs and Brian DePizzo in working this case and of course to all the jurors who were willing to come in and gave their time to be fair and impartial during this COVID pandemic," Sanders said.
The jury took a little more than an hour to reach the verdicts.
