June hearing is set for Boardman girl accused in Stadium Drive apartment shooting

Boardman girl, 17, to face attempted murder charges

YOUNGSTOWN — A pretrial hearing is set for June 2 for a teen accused of attempted murder during Boardman shootings at an apartment complex earlier this month.

Jamia Dent, 17, of Boardman, is facing three counts of attempted murder, each with a three-year firearm specification, after four juveniles, including Dent, were injured by gunfire on May 2.

During a court appearance Tuesday in Mahoning County Juvenile Court, when the pretrial hearing was scheduled, evidence was exchanged between her defense and prosecution.

Earlier this month during her arraignment, Dent entered a “not true” plea to the charges, the equivalent in juvenile court to a not guilty plea.

According to the Boardman Police Department, a boy and girl, both 17, were taken to a hospital after 12:30 a.m. May 2 when they were shot an apartment complex at 188 Stadium Drive.

The girl was shot in the facial area while the boy was shot in the groin area, police stated. A third victim was “grazed” by the gunfire as well.

A witness told investigators an argument began at the apartment, during which Dent allegedly said she was going to shoot someone, the police report stated.

Boardman police Chief Todd Werth has said the victims and suspect are “known to each other.” The motive for the shooting has not been revealed, but it was not a random act, he said previously.
