YOUNGSTOWN -- One of the three people killed Sunday in a shooting near the Torch Club on Salt Springs Road was killed by injuries sustained in a vehicle crash, not gunshot wounds, the Youngstown Police Department clarified Tuesday in a news release.
Charles Boerio, 27, died after a vehicle crash at Salt Springs Road and Greenwood Avenue around the time of the shootings at the bar and grill. The crash was several blocks east.
At a news conference early Sunday, police said Boerio was one of three people who suffered fatal gunshots near the bar. But the Mahoning County Coroner's Office later determined that Boerio died as a result of injuries in the crash, not from gunshots, the news release states.
Detectives are still investigating to determine whether Boerio and the others involved in the multivehicle crash at that intersection were leaving the scene of the shooting.
The news release states the two men who died as a result of gunfire near the bar -- Mikquan C. Stevens, 19, and Rayshaun L. Clay, 23 -- were taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
Of the three other men who suffered gunshot wounds near the bar, one has since been released from the hospital. The two others remain hospitalized.
Meanwhile, a city man failed to appear in Youngstown Municipal Court on Monday for arraignment on a gun charge and obstructing official business -- charges filed at the scene of Sunday morning's shootings.
Youngstown police said when they responded to the Torch Club, 1283 Salt Springs Road, for the 2:11 a.m. shootings, they found city man Kejuan Clay, 28, standing near a deceased man at the intersection of Elberen and Salt Springs Road, near the Torch Club.
It is not known whether Kejuan Clay and Rayshaun Clay are related.
As two officers assessed the scene, including a large crowd, Kejuan Clay began swearing, yelling and "hindering responding officers from securing the scene and assist(ing) the shooting victim," a police report states.
An officer escorted Kejuan Clay to a police cruiser to detain him pending further investigation. The officer asked if he had any weapons, and he said he had a gun. He was placed in handcuffs, and an officer removed a loaded gun from Kejuan Clay's waistband. He was taken to the police station regarding the shootings and then to jail on charges of carrying a concealed weapon and obstructing official business.
He was released later that night and did not show up for his arraignment Monday. A warrant was issued for his arrest.
A fourth man died in a crash several blocks to the east of the bar Sunday night after his vehicle hit pillars under the Interstate 680 bridge on Salt Springs Road near Division Street.
His name is Nicholas Boerio, 43, but police have not said whether he is related to the Boerio who died in the Sunday-morning crash or whether Nicholas Boerio's death is related to the shootings early Sunday near the bar.
