Campbell man charged in credit card fraud case

Joseph Brown, 62, of Campbell, is among eight people indicted federally in a scheme that used stolen and fraudulent credit card accounts to purchase at least $750,000 worth of items.

The eight are charged in a 22-count indictment with conspiracy to commit access device fraud, access device fraud and aggravated identity theft.

Brown appeared in Cleveland federal court Tuesday and pleaded not guilty. Bond of $20,000 was set. He is set for a change-of-plea hearing at 12:45 June 15 before Judge Dan A. Polster in Cleveland.

The others indicted with Brown are Diontae Wallace, 35, of Warrensville Heights; Adrienne Campbell, 53, of Cleveland; Jovanna Brown, 33, of Warrensville Heights; Marcellus Smith, 27, of Cleveland; James Luke, 43, of Cleveland; Glenn King, 27, of Cleveland; and Shirley Ladson, 37, of Shaker Heights.

The U.S. attorney’s office for the Northern District of Ohio stated in a news release that from late 2016 to about April 2020, Wallace recruited the co-conspirators to participate in the credit-card scheme.

It is alleged that Wallace purchased personal identifying information from the dark web and used it to open fraudulent credit card accounts.

Wallace then created fictitious identification cards bearing the stolen personal identifying information and a photograph of a co-conspirator.

Wallace provided the fraudulent identification cards and credit cards to his co-conspirators to use at his direction, their indictments state.

They used the fraudulent credit card accounts and identification cards to purchase various items, including retail goods, construction and building materials, appliances and equipment from various stores and vendors around northeast Ohio and elsewhere, the indictment states.

Wallace also sold the purchased items to others and used the proceeds for his own benefit and to pay his co-conspirators, prosecutors allege.

An investigation into the scheme was carried out by the Cleveland office of the FBI and is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
