Boscov’s to open in October
Launching Eastwood Mall location with 3-day celebration
WARREN — Known for its extravagant store grand openings, Boscov’s will open its Eastwood Mall location Oct. 7 with a three-day event that includes charitable giving, entertainment, family activities and fireworks.
Opening of the store — the largest single store at the retail center at more than 180,000 square feet — was delayed a year due to challenges brought on the viral outbreak.
The company had halted construction of the new store at the Cafaro Company-owned mall earlier in the outbreak during the state’s discontinued stay-at-home order. Construction resumed later, but with smaller crews and at a slower pace because of the outbreak.
It will occupy about one-third of the mall’s west concourse, including the former Sears department store. To make the space for the new retailer, several stores in that concourse have been relocated inside the mall.
It will be the retailer’s 49th location and second in Ohio. The other Boscov’s is Ohio Valley Mall in St. Clairesville, which also is owned and operated by the Cafaro Company.
“The delayed opening gave us time to put together a wonderful three-day grand opening celebration created uniquely for the Mahoning (Valley) and Shenango Valley communities,” Jim Boscov, chairman and CEO of Boscov’s, said.
The first day, Charity Day, is devoted to raising awareness and money for local nonprofit organizations. Shoppers can make a $5 donation to their favorite participating nonprofit and be the first to shop the new store, plus receive a gift.
Nonprofit groups interested in participating should email communityrelations@boscovs.com to learn more.
Day No. 2 on Oct. 8 is Family Fun Day and will include fireworks. Day No. 3 is the formal ribbon-cutting ceremony.
“Boscov’s is a unique full-service department store. In addition to all the traditional departments from apparel to furniture, you’ll find a candy department where you can pick your favorite assortment of Boscov’s chocolates and a toy department with a play area your kids will love,” Boscov said.
The store will hire about 250 employees.
Boscov’s is the largest family-owned department store chain in the U.S. In its 106th year, the company operates in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Ohio.
