Board of Developmental Disabilities seeks voter support on levy renewal

NILES — The Trumbull County Board of Developmental Disabilities has taken the first step to get a 1.5-mill renewal operating levy on the November ballot to raise $7 million for day-to-day operations and needs of the district.

Superintendent Edward Stark said the 10-year levy was first passed in 2012.

He said the county auditor will certify the exact amount the 1.5-mill levy will generate before the board gives a final second reading at the May 24 meeting. Stark said with a renewal, there will be no increase in taxes, and the levy is countywide, so all residents will vote on it.

He said the levy covers all aspects of the district from transportation, Fairhaven school programs and various services for children and adults with special needs and disabilities.

In other business, the board passed a motion for TCBDD to partner with the Mahoning County Board of Developmental Disabilities and Boundless Inc. to develop a respite home for multi-system youth located at the Mahoning Valley Campus of Care (formerly the Youngstown Developmental Center) in Mineral Ridge.

Stark said clients from both counties will use the facility with plans to use a current building at the site for the respite home. He said renovation work will begin this spring at the location and be completed by the end of summer.

In other action at the April 26 meeting, the board:

• Approved the 2021-22 school calendar with first day for students Aug. 26 and last day June 1, 2022;

• Approved GPD Group to prepare and solicit bids for swimming pool improvements. Stark said plans are to add a second drain at the pool so there is less intense suction from only having one drain;

• Approved GPD Group to prepare and solicit bids for heating, ventilation and air conditioning replacement at TCBDD buildings. Stark said there are many vents that need replaced;

• Hired Harlan Jones as a facilities maintenance technician on a one-year contract through Aug. 31. 2022 at $44,720. The position was transitioned from a nine-month bus driver vacancy;

• Accepted the resignation of Angela Montecalvo from the position of service and support administrator effective April 9.
