1 dead in city shooting

YOUNGSTOWN — City police detectives are investigating an early Sunday shooting near Judson Avenue and Market Street on the city’s South Side that left one person dead and another hospitalized.

Police were called just after 3:30 a.m. Sunday to Market Street, where reports state three men were involved in a possible shooting. Reports state police received calls of shots being fired near Judson Avenue and Market Street followed by a single-vehicle crash near railroad tracks off Southern Boulevard and East Judson.

A 19-year-old man was found dead inside the vehicle, and another man also was found inside with nonlife threatening injuries. He was transported to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. A third man inside the vehicle was not injured, reports state.

The name of the shooting victim has not been released. No arrests have been made in the case as of Sunday evening.

Police shut down Southern Boulevard between Hilton Ave and East Judson Avenue to conduct an investigation. They cleared the scene several hours later. Youngstown police and the Mahoning County Coroner are investigating.

In 2021, 34 people have been shot in Youngstown, with eight of them being fatal. Ninety-eight people were shot during the year 2020, resulting in 28 deaths.
