YOUNGSTOWN — The city’s parks and recreation summer programs, shut down in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, are moving ahead this year.

The city’s summer camp program will be June 7 to Aug. 6 with early registration starting today.

Registration is 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays at the summer camp office, 3025 South Ave. A registration event will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 15 at Wick Park with extended registrations at locations throughout the city May 17 to 21.

Reservations for pavilion rentals will begin May 3 in person, by appointment only, at the parks and recreation office on the first floor of city hall. Call the department at 330-742-8711 or email parks@youngstownohio.gov to make an appointment.

Reservations will be for event rentals scheduled for June 1 to Dec. 31.

The Northside Pool is to open June 6, weather permitting. That’s two weeks earlier than what was announced in late February.

The Henry Stambaugh Golf Course reopened April 1.

Also, the Sunday Jazz in the Park Concert Series at Wick Park is to start July 18, weather permitting.

“The goal is to provide summer park activities that meet the social-distancing guidelines and approval from the Youngstown City Health District Commissioner Erin Bishop,” Dawn Turnage, parks and recreation director, said.

The department also is seeking to hire seasonal employees for the golf course, pool and summer camps.

employment and then go to non-civil service and seasonal employment.

Applications have to be signed, dated and mailed to Youngstown Parks and Recreation Office, 26 S. Phelps St., Youngstown, OH 44503.

All of the city’s recreational facilities, except walking trails, were closed in mid-March last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic with the pool and golf course not opening at all.
