Liberty resident shot in back; one in custody

LIBERTY — A 24-year-old township man is in Trumbull County jail in connection to an early Wednesday shooting at the Oak Tree Apartments off Hadley Avenue in Liberty.

Derek Sanders, of a Trumbull Court address, is awaiting arraignment in Girard Municipal Court on charges of felonious assault, carrying concealed weapons and improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle.

According to police, officers were dispatched to the apartment complex at 5:21 a.m. to find a victim who was shot in the back. The victim, a 24-year-old Youngstown man, was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where he is in intensive care, a report states.

A Trumbull County 911 report showed the call came from someone who was awakened by five gunshots. The victim was loaded into a white sedan and taken to the hospital, the report states. The gun used was a Springfield Armory model, according to the 911 report.

Detectives are investigating the incident as a dispute between two men over a woman, the report states.

“Our officers did a great job of determining what occurred and placing the shooter immediately under arrest,” police Chief Toby Meloro said.

The Oak Tree apartment complex is a few blocks south of the apartment complex where two neighbors were involved in a shooting July 6, 2020, that this week went to trial in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. Daryl Casey Jr., 27, was convicted Wednesday of one charge of discharging a firearm into a habitation with firearm specifications.
