Campbell, Educational Center looking for community partners

Staff report

CAMPBELL — Campbell City Schools and the Educational Service Center of Eastern Ohio are seeking community partners to collaborate in a Voices of the Valley event.

The evening event connects English language learner students and their families with local resources, according to the ESCEO, formerly the Mahoning County Educational Service Center.

“The goal of the event is to get our families more involved,” said Jane Buckingham, special services director for Campbell City Schools.

Voices of the Valley will take place May 13 at the Community Literacy Workforce and Cultural Center in Campbell.

Families of English language learner students from throughout the Mahoning Valley will be invited to attend. Participation will be both in-person and virtually.

The ESCEO provides resources and support for districts with English language learners.

There has been an increase in English language learner students in the area, Buckingham noted.

“This event will help families — both from our district and from other area schools — network and connect with resources and other families in the community,” she said.

Families will learn about schooling in the United States and will be provided district-specific information and updates at the event.

The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, the English Center, Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio, United Way and Mahoning Valley College Access are among a list of partners who will be represented at the event.

Organizations and businesses wishing to partner with Campbell City Schools and ESCEO should contact Buckingham at 330-799-6810 or jbuckingham@campbell.k12.oh.us.
