Boardman bus aide resigns

BOARDMAN — In a unanimous decision, the Boardman Board of Education accepted the resignation of a bus aide charged with child endangerment.

David Genuske, 70, of Canfield, submitted his letter of resignation earlier in the week, Superintendent Tim Saxton said during a special meeting Thursday.

Saxton recommended, along with district counsel, that the resignation be accepted.

The letter simply included Genuske’s intent to resign, Saxton said.

“We believe it’s the right way to go,” Saxton said following the meeting. Now, Genuske will have to answer to the court system, he said.

Earlier in the week, Genuske entered a not guilty plea and is scheduled for a hearing April 29 in Boardman County Court No. 2, according to court documents.

On March 17, both the district and Boardman Police Department were notified by Mahoning County Children Services regarding a March 16 incident of Genuske dragging a 4-year-old on the sidewalk near West Boulevard Elementary.

Footage from surveillance video confirmed the incident, Sgt. Mike Sweeney previously said.

The child is a student at the Mahoning County Educational Service Center’s preschool housed at West Boulevard. Saxton said Thursday the child still attends the preschool.

When an incident happens and a resignation or termination occurs, it is mandatorily reported, Saxton said.

“In situations like this, the employee, when they resign under threat of termination, are reported to the Office of Professional Conduct,” he explained, adding that stays within the employee’s file.

Now, the district will look at the hiring process for aides, possibly amending the process, Saxton said.

Genuske was arrested on a charge of child endangerment on March 24, the same day a warrant was issued for his arrest.
