Police cite Girard woman in crash

GIRARD — A city woman entered a not guilty plea following a crash Saturday.

Michelle Payich, 50, of 390 Moccasin Trail, is accused of driving under the influence and operation without reasonable control following the incident.

Officers were called to the intersection of North Ward Avenue and Moccasin Trail about 10:40 p.m. where they found the vehicle with Payich inside. A police report states officers noted Payich had slurred and slow speech, glossy and bloodshot eyes and alcohol on her breath.

The report states officers found severe and fresh damage to the front passenger bumper and the wheel area of the vehicle. The report states “a chunk of the front passenger side bumper” was missing. Payich told officers the damage was old and had been that way for a while, the report states.

Payich told officers she had three drinks before leaving a Niles bar and while trying to turn onto Moccasin Trail, her vehicle “stopped working.”

While searching the area, officers found a tree with damage and tire marks leading to the tree and away from it. The report states there were large pieces of a bumper matching the paint and body style of Payich’s vehicle, but she denied knowing about the damage or debris. Officers asked Payich to submit a field sobriety test, which she refused. She was then placed under arrest, the report states.

After arriving at Girard Police Department, she refused a breath sample and her license was then placed under administrative suspension. She was later released to her son.

Court records show Payich’s attorney filed a written not guilty plea and Payich will appear at a later date for a pre-trial hearing.
